A new generation of guided vacations… “themed”

Guided vacations have taken on a whole new identity of late… what used to be termed “escorted tour” is now “guided vacation”… giving the impression that instead of telling you where to go, when to go and how to go and holding your hand the entire time, tour companies are now “guiding” you… still giving you the ease of figuring out your “where, when and how” but allowing you more free time and suggesting additional things to do.

Now they are taking them a step further.  How? An example is Trafalgar Tour’s Photography themed “Focus” tours.

Offering such destinations as Costa Rica, Canadian Rockies, American Southwest and the Yucatan Penisula of Mexico; you can now have the ease of a guided vacation along with expert guidance from travel photographers Kerrick James and Julie Quarry on this very special series!

Custom-designed for every type of photographer, from point-n-shooters to serious DSLR image-makers, Trafalgar in Focus is a series hosted by renowned photographers who will share with you the latest techniques and tips and give you the chance to perfect them in real-time shooting. All while you experience the history, culture and people in some of the world’s most fascinating destinations.

Discover your inner photographer on these incredible adventures.

To give you a sampling of what you would expect.. here is their Costa Rica Adventure that departs June 18th 2011:

Day 1 Arrive San Jose
Pura Vida! Bienvenidos a Costa Rica! Your journey begins with a warm greeting from your local tour representative and a complimentary transfer to your hotel.
Hotel: Real InterContinental Hotel
Day 2 San Jose – Tortuguero National Park (2 nights)
See Costa Rica through the lens of an eco-adventurer, a wildlife conservator, local resident and yes, through the lens of your camera. Your first chance to snap pictures comes as you journey by boat to Tortuguero National Park. Situated adjacent to the small town of the same name, the park is dedicated to protecting the nesting habitat for sea turtles. The town and the wetlands are accessible only by boat and small plane. Exploring the system of canals and lagoons, keep an eye out for sea turtles, manatee, crocodiles, monkeys and a myriad of birds. You’ll be encouraged to shoot – with your camera, of course – the creatures who make this park their home. Touring the Turtle Museum, you’ll learn about these interesting animals. (Please note that there is a voluntary donation of $2 requested here.) Your first photo presentation, “How to Point and Shoot,” gives you the know-how to confidently wield your camera for the best results.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Hotel: Laguna Lodge or Evergreen Lodge
Day 3 Tortuguero National Park
Tortuguero National Park is so prolific, you’ll appreciate a second opportunity to photograph its amazing wetlands. In the early morning light, ply the canals by open boat, getting you up close to the fauna and flora. After breakfast, join a guided rainforest walk, an easy trek with photo opportunities as abundant as the plants and animals. Your camera will barely have a chance to recharge before being called into duty later in the day, as you once again board a boat and search for wildlife. Shoot the smiles of your travel companions during tonight’s dinner.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Hotel:  Laguna Lodge or Evergreen Lodge
Day 4 Tortuguero National Park – Sarapiqui
Depart Tortuguero – by boat, naturally – to begin your journey to Sarapiqui, a beautiful valley community surrounded by rainforest. The area is relatively unknown, and home to some of Costa Rica’s most diverse and dense vegetation and wildlife. If you’re itching to do a little exploring on your own, you’re in luck, because the afternoon is yours to spend as you like. Join an optional activity, such as a scenic horseback ride or a Class II and III whitewater rafting adventure.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Hotel: La Quinta Hotel
Day 5 Sarapiqui – Arenal
Glimpse Costa Rica’s fascinating past with a visit to the Archeological Museum. Then launch an expedition to amazing Arenal Volcano. Rising 5,436 feet above sea level, the volcano is the most active and mesmerizing of all Costa Rica’s volcanoes. It booms and rumbles with an unnerving regularity, with nocturnal pyrotechnics that strike awe in the hearts of observers. With its perfectly conical shape and continuous activity, Arenal is a picture-perfect volcano. Speaking of pictures, you’ll have the chance to capture the drama of the volcano, including its lava flows and sudden explosions, which are virtually daily occurrences. Savor the chance to get to know area residents with a “Be My Guest” lunch with a local family, showcasing dances by students. A visit to Tabacon River Hot Springs lets you swim in pools filled with warm mineral water, surrounded by well-manicured gardens and spanned by wooden bridges. After dinner at an open-air restaurant, you’ll trek to the volcano for your highly anticipated twilight photo shoot (weather permitting). Capture images of the red lava flows creeping down the volcano’s slopes and the sparking gases illuminating the sky.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Hotel: Arenal Manoa Hotel
Day 6 Arenal – Monteverde Cloud Forest (2 nights)
Journey to lush Monteverde, an area astounding for its diverse habitats and wildlife. The private Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve protects vast acres of mountain cloud forest and fosters research projects, providing environmental education for over 40,000 Costa Ricans and international visitors each year. After lunch on your own, enjoy free time for picture taking and participating in optional activities. Maybe you will experience the misty jungle from horseback; perhaps you will take the Don Juan Coffee Tour; or maybe you will discover El Trapiche Sugar Cane Mill. Shutterbugs will delight in the chance to have their five best shots processed by the tour’s photo expert, who will demonstrate advanced yet simple techniques for making digital images come alive.
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Hotel: El Establo Hotel
Day 7 Monteverde Cloud Forest
If there is a place boasting a staggering number of photo opportunities, it is here in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Private Reserve, a paradise of towering trees festooned with orchids, bromeliads, ferns, vines and mosses, and laced with crystal-clear streams and cascading waterfalls. Capture some of the birds, butterflies, reptiles and plants – including 420 types of orchids and 200 species of fern – with your trusty camera. Shooting from the Sky Walk in the Santa Elena forest, you’ll get an entirely different perspective on the forest.
